Acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the Illawarra Region

Rosemont Endoscopy Centre acknowledges the Dharawal speaking people as the Traditional Custodians of the Illawarra region. For generations, they have cared for this land, its waterways, and coastlines, maintaining deep spiritual and cultural connections. We recognise and respect their ongoing presence and pay our heartfelt respects to Elders past and present.

For thousands of years, the Dharawal people have cared for this Country, living in small family groups with deep social and cultural ties to specific areas. They moved freely throughout the region, sharing resources with neighbouring groups in a way that reflected their respect for land, community, and sustainability. Today, their descendants continue to uphold these traditions, maintaining a strong and enduring presence in the Illawarra.

The name Wollongong, derived from the Aboriginal word Woolyungah, is believed to mean “Five Islands,” reflecting the region’s coastal significance. Other interpretations suggest meanings such as “the sound of the sea” or “hard ground near water.” These names reflect the Dharawal people’s deep connection to the land and ocean, which hold great cultural and historical importance.

There are many significant Dharawal sites in the region including Mount Kembla, Mount Keira, Hill 60, Sandon Point, and Coomaditchie Lagoon—all of which remain vital to local Aboriginal communities for their cultural and spiritual significance. The Towri Bush Tucker Garden, located in Wollongong Botanic Garden, showcases native plants used by Dharawal people for food, medicine, and shelter. It was named by the Traditional Custodians of the land and means ‘learning place bounded by flowers and trees.’

We also recognise that many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from other nation groups—including the Yuin, Wiradjuri, Kamilaroi, Bundjalung, Dunghutti, and Gumbayggir—have made the Illawarra their home. We acknowledge their cultural identities, histories, and contributions to the region.

At Rosemont Endoscopy Centre, we are committed to listening, learning, and working together in the spirit of reconciliation and respect.
